Hey, Did Someone Just Turn 50?

As of November 30th, my brother Mike is now 50 years old. And what a 50th birthday it was! A two-night stay at the beach in an establishment managed by the Don Cesar Resort. Friends and family gathered for the surprise party organized by his significant other, Yoko. Lots of food and gifts...and, unfortunately, illness.

Yoko became sick with a stomach flu right before the party was to begin. She managed to stay long enough to wish Mike a Happy Birthday when he arrived, and then she had to leave with her parents who flew from the west coast for the event (her mother was just healing from the flu). So we partied without Yoko and her parents. By next morning Mike was ill with the same stomach flu and slept all day in his beach suite while I and my sister Helaina (who also flew in from the west coast for the event) gathered shells on the beach, took photos on the beach, and went tourist shopping (well, she did). Finally, around 6pm, Mike got up and took a beach walk with us (which also included his teen children who had stayed in the hotel and watched TV while tending to their father). It was near sunset and the dolphins were cruising the waters, the birds were diving for dinner into the waves, and the sun was being bent into all sorts of weird positions by the effects of the clouds and the horizon. By that evening we heard that Yoko's father was sick with the same stomach flu. Yoko never made it back to the hotel.

So, I feel kinda guilty for having fun at the beach while Yoko and Mike were sick, but I guess that's what they call life. I haven't been to the beach in years. It wasn't crowded because it was in-between summer and the winter tourist season, and so it was so peaceful and relaxing. The weather was perfect too. It's such a shame that Mike and Yoko were sick and couldn't enjoy their weekend at the beach. I did gather enough seashells to share with them (and the rest of the world)......
